Skills: Dr. Vanessa Leung is an expert in digital health, wearable technologies, and biomedical engineering and has a PhD in Applied Physics from the University of Bonn. She has significant experience managing and leading projects across countries and academic disciplines and mediating between stakeholders from universities, clinical services, and industry. In 2016, Vanessa became the Junior Research Group Leader of the Human Optics Lab at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, University of Basel, where she and her colleagues started developing eye-tracking applications for healthcare. She is the recipient of a Novartis FreeNovation grant for innovation.

Since 2021, Vanessa has led the Competency Team Digital Biomarkers for Wellbeing at the Interdisciplinary Center for Digital Health and Social Innovation (CDHSI) at St. Pölten University of Applied Sciences, Austria. Her research revolves around using multimodal data from sensor technologies to support, enhance, and validate training and therapy in healthcare. Vanessa has been awarded third-party funding for her research at both the national (FFG project EyeQTrack) and European levels (Horizon Europe project XR2esilience). She is the Principal Coordinator of a prospective Research Center of Excellence within the European alliance E³UDRES² (ECDHSI). Vanessa believes combining different research modalities—such as subjective and objective metrics, qualitative and quantitative methods, modeling, and experimentation— while keeping real-world effectiveness as the ultimate benchmark leads to deeper scientific insights and more practical solutions.
