Degree name: Master in psychology
Area of expertise: Social sciences
Skills: As an expert in gaming disorder, media studies, and gambling, my current work focuses on the prevalence and prevention of problematic gaming behaviors, particularly in youth. A key area of my research explores the convergence of gambling elements within video games and how these features can lead to problematic gaming behaviors or even gambling-related issues. I aim to bridge the gap between gaming and gambling prevention by developing targeted strategies that address the blurred boundaries between these two areas.

In my ongoing PhD research, I analyze prevention workers' needs in Flanders and explore self-expressed needs and help-seeking behaviors of problematic gamers through content analysis of online communities, such as the subreddit r/StopGaming. This research is critical for understanding how gaming and gambling interact and how prevention strategies can be tailored to this convergence.

Furthermore, I have contributed to the adaptation of the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system in mental health centers, enabling the registration of problematic gaming, which informs policy-making and intervention strategies. My role as a therapist offers clinical insights into addiction patterns, enriching my research on gaming disorder and prevention.

Public outreach has also been a significant aspect of my work, where I engage with both academic and professional audiences, participate in expert panels, and offer media commentary on the growing issue of gaming and gambling convergence. I advocate for a balanced, evidence-based approach to prevent problematic gaming and gambling behaviors, with a focus on early intervention and the development of practical tools for prevention workers and parents.
